Scotland (1998) - Where do the Murdochs
live now?
The brief answer ...
Available figures would imply there
are about 5000 Murdochs presently living in Scotland, almost 0.1% of the
population.
There are two clear concentrations
above the national average, firstly in Galloway and Ayrshire and secondly
in rural Aberdeenshire, Moray and Banff.
There is a wide belt of low concentration
between these highs stretching from the Highland and Islands through Perthshire,
Angus, Dundee, Fife, Lothians, Edinburgh and the Borders.

This map is based on the listings
from the 14 telephone directories of Scotland.
Estimated Murdochs per 10000
population
* - Central and Ayrshire have
had Glasgow entries removed |
Notes:
-
The largest source of error is in estimated
the total number of listings. Murdoch figures were counted in 5s. A typical
error of +/-0.7 should apply.
-
There is no reason to believe that
Murdochs are significantly different as regards being ex-directory. The figures
where calulated using the number of Murdochs (with the occasional Murdock)
counted to the nearest 5 divided by an estimate of the total listings (number
of pages X 520 average listings per page). This was reduced to a per 10000
figure. There is an average of 9.5 Murdochs per 10000 telephone entries
nationwide.
-
Orkney and Shetland listings are in
the Aberdeen book.
-
Glasgow North and South, both gave
10.0.
-
The Health Board populations below
have no overlap. The ratio of listings to population where Health and Phonebook
area match is around 2.5. Slightly higher for urban (more ex-directory?),
lower in rural. From this it is possible to estimate directory overlap
and propose adjusted figures
-
There is an directory area overlap
between Fife and Tayside (6.0 & 5.9) , but these figures so close this
isn't significant.
-
There is also an overlap between Glasgow
South and Ayrshire Coast (10.0 and 15.6) with approx 90,000 Glasgow entries
in the Ayrshire Coast directory this suggests an Ayrshire only figure
should be about 3.0 greater and about the same as the Southwest.
-
Similarly, Central appears to contain
approx 100,000 duplicate Glasgow entries. This would suggest a Central
only figure of around 2.0 lower which would be consistent with Fife,
Lothian and Tayside.

This map is based on 12 of the 15
National Health Service (Scotland), Health Board figures for population in
June 1992. Total population of Scotland was 5.111 Million. Regional populations
are multiplied by the Murdochs per 10000 above.
Estimated Murdochs in each area
 |
Notes:
-
Again, there is no reason to believe
that Murdochs are significantly different with regards to age profile or
family size. Figures were derived by applying the above telephone based figures
to the total regional populations. Figures are rounded to the nearest
50.
-
Western Isles is added to Highland;
Orkney and Shetland to Grampian.
-
NE and Aberdeen merge into Grampian.
Average 10.75 from 12.5 and 9.0 used.
-
Since both Directory and Health Board
boundaries are based on physical geography they normally coincide.
-
Two significant exceptions mentioned
above in the previous notes would suggest that Ayrshire should be higher
by about 100 and Central lower by about 50.
-
Other minor mismatches between Health
and Telephone areas occur where per10000 figures are similar or in areas
of low population.
